Town Halls
Youth Council Town Halls je dlouhodobý vzdělávací projekt, v jehož rámci řada hostů z různých oblastí diskutuje na středních školách se studenty témata bezpečnosti, obrany a demokracie v České republice. Projektu se v minulosti účastnili např. bývalý velvyslanec v Moskvě a Washingtonu Petr Kolář nebo prezident, arm. gen. ve výslužbě a bývalý předseda vojenského výboru NATO Petr Pavel.
The Town Halls project follows the American tradition of meeting with public officials - the so-called town hall meetings - and transfers the debate from classic impersonal lecturing directly to students. In this innovative format, distinguished speakers respond directly to students' questions, fostering an interactive discussion.
The goal of the Town Halls project is to enable the development of a healthy civil society as a key foundation for the functioning of a democratic state. The Town Halls themselves then aim to develop civil society on a regional level to assess, answer and highlight key issues of concern to young and upcoming voters. Particularly given the low participation of the youth in local politics, the Youth Council sees the Town Halls project as an ideal opportunity to encourage the political participation of young citizens and thus enable them to participate in the creation of a democratic world that also reflects their interests.
Od roku 2019 jsme s projektem Town Halls zavítali mezi studenty škol napříč celou Českou republikou. Našeho vzdělávacího projektu se zúčastnily školy nejen z Prahy, ale i z Trutnova, Ostravy, Lovosic nebo třeba Českých Budějovic. Konkrétně jsme toto unikátní setkání zprostředkovali institucím jako je Arcibiskupské gymnázium, Gymnázium Botičská, Gymnázium profesora Jana Patočky, Střední průmyslovou školu Trutnov, Letohradské soukromé gymnázium, Gymnázium Česká, Biskupského gymnázium J. N. Neumanna, Gymnázium Jana Nerudy, či Gymnázium Olgy Havlové.

Na základě získaných zkušeností a dotazníků z těchto akcí se pro budoucnost Town Halls rozšiřuje okruh přednášejících a záběr témat, aby bylo zajištěno maximální pokrytí témat, které mladé Čechy zajímají. It is in this context of regional participation that the Open Society Fund Prague has graciously decided to support this project in 2022.
Town Halls is a very flexible project, and even in the coronavirus era it has retained its unique interactive character. Despite the limitations of the virtual format, students could raise their questions effectively and educate themselves through the guests about the challenges of the contemporary world.
The OSF Foundation supported the 2022 debate series.
The project is being supported by the Open Society Fund Prague from the Active Citizens Fund. The programme promotes citizens’ active participation in public life and decision making and builds the capacities of civil society organizations. The Active Citizens Fund is financed from the EEA and Norway Grants.

Examples of Youth Council Town Halls
2024
V březnu jsme uspořádali debatu se středoškolskými studenty Gymnázia mezinárodních a veřejných vztahů v Praze na téma Češi v zahraničí. Náš spolek představila bývalá ředitelka Tereza Ottová. Samotné přednášky se zhostil Martin Nekola, politolog a historik. Studenti měli možnost se interaktivním způsobem dozvědět i více o kontextu událostí února 48 a jejich následcích. Aktuálně chystáme debatu na aktuální téma výročí vzniku NATO a přístupu ČR do NATO.
2023
Town Halls pokračuje i v roce 2023. V únoru se podařilo navštívit Gymnázium Václava Hlavatého v Lounech a Gymnázium Dr.J.Pekaře v Mladé Boleslavi.
2022
We started the Town Halls series in 2022 this time with students from Český Krumlov. The students were well prepared and the debate with General Petr Pavel was mainly about the ongoing war in Ukraine. The main interest of the students turned to the partnership between Russia, India and China.
The next Town Hall we prepared was held on 11 May at the Gymnasium Na Zatlanka in Prague. We talked with students mainly about the war in Ukraine, and students were interested in diplomatic and military solutions to this conflict. Other topics we discussed with students included the role of citizens - especially young people - in democracy and global and domestic threats.
Následující Town Hall se konal na gymnáziu v Lovosicích a hosty byli pplk. Ivo Zelinka a velvyslanec Petr Kolář. Pro žáky byla připravena prezentace ohledně válečné taktiky. Pan velvyslanec zavzpomínal na své mládí z období totality i své zážitky jako český diplomat. Následná diskuze se studenty byla naplněna dotazy hlavně ohledně současné situace na Ukrajině. 2020
Despite the coronavirus restrictions, at the beginning of the school year, the Youth Council was able to organize another YC Town Hall. This time, Ambassador Petr Kolář and General Petr Pavel met with students from Gymnázium Jaroslava Heyrovského in Prague and discussed the importance of engaged democracy, critical thinking, and sophisticated debate for a democratic society. The students were interested mostly in the role of the Czech Republic in NATO, Czech reputation in foreign diplomacy, and the future of western civilization. In the end, Ambassador Kolář and General Pavel emphasized the importance of education as a basis for informed decisions resulting in democracy immune to manipulation and lethargy.
Town Halls online
Even in pandemic times, the Town Halls project was not stopped. We adapted to the constraints and moved the project online. The YC Town Halls were held online twice via the Zoom platform.
Before starting their Christmas holidays, students from Pražské humanitní gymnásium had a unique opportunity to debate with General Petr Pavel and former ambassador Petr Kolář. During the virtual meeting, the students examined topics concerning international security and the challenges of today's world. They also discussed the resilience of society in the times of the coronavirus pandemic.
2019
Od začátku projektu v roce 2019 jsme navštívili školy po celé České republice. Našeho vzdělávacího projektu se zúčastnily školy nejen z Prahy, ale i z Trutnova, Ostravy nebo třeba Českých Budějovic. Jednou z pražských škol, které jsme v rámci projektu Town Halls navštívili, bylo Gymnázium Jana Nerudy. Po úvodní přednášce generála Pavla o konceptu vnitřní i vnější bezpečnosti nastal čas na diskusi. Studenti se předháněli s relevantními a zajímavými otázkami, které se týkaly nejen každodenních povinností předsedy Vojenského výboru NATO, ale i mezinárodního vlivu Ruska a Číny či polarizace. Řeč přišla i na současný stav české armády, brannou povinnost i aktuální situace na Středním východě.
In December 2019, the YC Town Halls was set out to visit the regions for the first time! First, they visited Střední průmyslová škola, Trutnov, Školní 101 (SPŠ Trutnov) together with general Petr Pavel who informed local students about the NATO’s capacity for action as well as military readiness of the Czech Republic. Conscription was also one of the topics discussed.
